Just yesterday Miles sat up without me holding on to him.
He was just too adorable, I had to take his picture.

5 Months Old Today!

Oh my stars! Where has all the time gone? I can't wrap my head around the fact that I have been on duty for 5 months now. Miles is doing all sorts of great things:
  • Sitting up for at least a couple mins. before he plops to one side.
  • Reaching and grabbing for items he can get his little hands on.
  • Trying to stuff his whole hand into his mouth... as well as his feet!
  • Eating mashed Bananas.
  • Trying to stand.
  • And giving hugs and kisses to mommy and daddy!

Happy Memorial Day!

One of My Favorite Toys...

The 3 animals Miles likes tha best are the monkey, parrot and the elephant. He will usually give them a daily beat down. Pretty soon the animal rights activists wil be knocking down the door due to the high pitch yells of the po' po' animals!

Not Your Average Diaper Change!

I was just minding my own business and BOOM! I heard an explosion. Daddy picked me up only to find out that I had poo all up my back! It wasn't nearly as bad as when I exploded on my daddy's legs. Sorry about that pops. Being changed like this didn't seem to phase me one bit I'm flexible like that I guess, well you have to be when your dealing with first time parents. Well, I gotta go 'cause daddy is cleaning my naked parts. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !

To Braid or not to Braid... That is the question?

Yippee! We are going to Famous Dave's ! Maybe they will give me a bone or sumthin'! While we were there I entertained a group of white women. Mommy has told me it is not necessary to disclose someone's race when describing people but, I feel it is important to the story. These woman were enamored with me and my," brown eyes, and beautiful hair". These are their words. They asked questions like, what is his name, and how old is he? When mommy told them I was 4months old the one woman said, " Oh! It's time to start braiding his hair!" Daddy and I thought mommy was going to flip her lid, but she remained cool. She replied, " Oh! no, there'll be NO BRAIDING OF THE HAIR! Maybe if he was a girl. Wait Miles, let mommy explain what I mean. If you are a mother who braids their son's hair that is totally your personal choice... I choose not to braid. I already knew the things I was going to do when I found out that I was having a boy and braiding hair was not one of them. I wanted my son to begin his life above the stereotype of what people think "little black boys" should look like! I am not raising a 'lil thug. Oh God I am not saying that all little boys that have their hair braided are thugs . Wow! This could go on forever. If you really have a prob then email me. Sorry folks no disrespect.
O.K. , mommy can I finish? Yes please finish. Why would she say something like that to my mommy, if she didn't think that that was the norm among African Americans? Please any and all comments accepted!

Now this is how I looked all the way home!

A Poem Break

I'm Sick And I Cannot Go To School Today
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash, and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox.
And there's one more ... that's seventeen!
And don't you think ... my face looks green?
My leg is cut, my eyes are blue,
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke.
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb,
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my spine is weak.
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent - my spine ain't straight.
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is ... ...
WHAT?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is ... Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Happy Mother's Day... Not for everyone!

On being my mother's daughter--

Being my mother's child had its ups and downs but all in all I have to say that my childhood was rich and full of love. Now looking back on those "downs" I see that they were my life's lessons, lessons preparing my for being a parent. As a child I couldn't see that, it just looked like mom was just trying to be mean to me! Anyone who knows me knows that my mother and I have an unbreakable bond and an unconditional love and mutual respect as women and now mothers. My mom and I have encountered a relationship between a mother and daughter that has been one of duty -- I had you now I have to take care of you! I''m not getting into the herstory of them but, now the mother is in her 80's and in a high-end assisted living facility and essentially is alone. The daughter comes to see her mother every other Sunday. Of all of her siblings her is the only one still living. She has some moments where she is lucid and there are moments when she takes residence in her own mind, which in some cases may be far more easier to live with the reality. In my opinion, the daughter has created a pocket in her mind that allows her not to have to deal with the reality, that they both never resolved their issues and she is now facing the possible death of her mother. Please understand these are not bad people at all, they just have difficulty with relationships.

My mother talked at length today about this situation, and we are saddened to know that there are broken mother/daughter relationships. If you happened to read this blog and you or someone you know has a broken relationship, no matter the relation, try to mend the fences. I share with you this quote and final thought...

Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a different way to stand.

Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo has been very important to me for several years, but not for the reasons that you may think. Sit right back and hear a tale ...

I had just moved back to Philly from Raleigh in November of 98 and just ended a 3yr relationship and was sick as a dog! The only thing I wanted to do was go to the movies with my movie buddy, but Ryan wasn't home and wasn't going to be for another 2 week's. I was also on the brink of losing my very best friend to his fiance. Yessssssssss you heard me correctly, Ryan was engaged to someone else. Rightfully so, she was going to take my place. Ryan wanted all of us to be wonderful friends and that wasn't going to happen!

I began to realize that I was seeing Ryan in a whole different light. I knew that we could not keep ignoring the Yellow Polka dot Elephant that took turns riding piggy back on the both of us! His fiance! At the time we were hanging out more and more, we were friends w/PDA.
I knew that his fiance didn't take her own corny @#$% proposal seriously. Meanwhile, my feelings were growing in leaps and bounds and trying not to get hurt in the long run, I gave him an ultimatum.
" You have until 12 midnite on May 5th to make a decision, either you essentially dump your fiance, who is otherwise flying your heart as a kite for the world to see how she is playing your romanticism for foolishness, and be with me.
OR

Leave me and heart intact before its too late.

Well some years later, a wedding and a baby.... I say he made the right choice!

Talk about a bad hair day!

When I saw the duck, I immediatley thought of this pic of Miles. Miles' hair isn't like Ryan's or mine. Maybe Miles is a decendant of this duck! The hair is a perfect match, I'll keep you posted if his first word is "quack"! But seriously, his hair is an homage to my "Mommy" aka
"Grandmommy"!

Today Miles goes in to have his 4 month shots and to make the most of our $5 co-pay, we ask every question; dumb and not so dumb. I love our doctor, it's just the staff at the office that piss me off! This wannabe nurse must have been fresh out of CHI institute. She tried to rush us through everything and not want to really handle Miles, basically Ryan and I did everything but take the boy's temperature! Every other nurse has told us to put a dry diaper on the baby to make sure that there aren't any added pounds. She didn't understand that at all. Anyhoo, once she collected all the info she left a survey for me to fill out. Needless to say they got an earfull.

baby stats
Weight: 17lbs 14 oz.
Length: 24 inches long
*Doctor is thoroughly impressed with Miles' development!
